Going to the dentist on a regular basis is an important part of proper dental hygiene. Whether your teeth and gums look and feel great or not, patients are encouraged to visit their dentist once every six months. The twice-yearly check-ups are crucial in the proactive prevention of tooth decay and gum disease. Dentist also check for signs of oral cancer during these routine cleanings which are key in saving the lives of patients.

Should you only go see your dentist twice a year? For patients with no prior dental treatments, chronic health conditions and healthy teeth and gums can get away with going to the dentist every six months.

There are times and conditions which warrant additional, more frequent office visits, however.

Dental emergencies require care from a dental professional right away. If you just experienced an accident with dental trauma, such as a cracked or chipped tooth or if your tooth got knocked out, immediate dental attention is necessary.

Some health conditions also warrant more frequent visits. Patients who are diabetic and those who are or have gone through chemotherapy, for instance should see their dentist more frequently because of their compromised immune systems. Women who are pregnant should also see their dentist frequently to ensure not only their overall health, but also the health of their baby.

Some patients will be asked by their dentist to come before the six month mark in order to do follow-up examinations for a dental procedure they have recently had done.

Patients should of course see their dentist when something in their mouth doesn’t feel or look right. Toothaches, aches of the face, sore, swollen and overly bloody gums are things that indicate possible advanced stages of tooth decay and gum disease and should not be overlooked.

Patients who live a certain lifestyle who are at greater risk of developing dental health issues such as smokers, those who drink alcohol often, and those who don’t eat healthy, should see their dentist more often as dental health issues can quickly escalate and issues that were initially simple and easy to treat soon require extensive dental work and may even cost the patient his or her life.

Patients who feel like they can’t enjoy life because they are too embarrassed to show off their smiles should also make an appointment with their dentist as soon as possible. Your dentist will be able to prescribe the necessary treatment to fix your less than ideal smile. A dental professional will not only be able to clean and examine your teeth, he or she can also whiten your smile and prescribe orthodontic treatment.

There are many reasons why it would be a good idea to see your dentist more than twice a year. If you have certain health conditions, recent dental work, live a certain lifestyle, have a dental emergency, experience pain and discomfort or have self-confidence issues because of your embarrassing smile, you likely should visit your dentist outside of the twice-yearly rule.

Patients who are healthy, have no discomfort or history of dental problems should still go and visit their dentist twice a year to ensure they can enjoy a healthy mouth for many more years to come.
